Review – Nomad Therapy Maduro by Nomad Cigar Company

Well, the sins are certainly still there but at least you're not going to cry in your truck listening to James Taylor's "Something In The Way She Moves" for at least another 48 hours."

Pre-light sniff of the foot reveals an unusual scent that reminds me of malt vinegar. Great, now I want Long John Silver chicken planks and I’ve got to sit here and review this damn cigar. It better be good. After gently removing the cap with scissors, the pre-light draw is open and clear with just the right amount of air flow. There’s a rich sweetness that hits my tongue right off the bat.

Upon torching the foot, the first impression I get is oak with a hint of that sweetness on the back end. It amazes me that not a single manufacturer has thought to name a cigar “Therapy” up until now. As a guy who rivals only Tony Soprano for ass miles spent in a comfortable chair next to a box of tissues (I kid, I kid… or do I?), I can more than relate like most Brothers of the Leaf to a cigar acting as a surrogate therapist. If it’s a good stogie, you walk away from it an hour and a half later feeling more centered, more focused, and all your sins have been washed away… Well, the sins are certainly still there but at least you’re not going to cry in your truck listening to James Taylor’s “Something In The Way She Moves” for at least another 48 hours.

About two inches in to the cigar and I’m getting notes of milk chocolate intermingling with the woodsy oak. The ash is holding strong and the draw is perfect.

A nice slight hint of coffee creamer enters the room just as the milk chocolate fades away. I attempt to take a photograph but my arm trembles from this morning’s workout and the ash says “Adios sucker!”, so I’ll let my exhausted biceps take the blame for this one and put no fault on the cigar. You see, lifting weights is another form of therapy only far less fun and people look at you oddly when you bring a glass of scotch over to the squat rack. Judgmental pricks.

So now we’re knee deep in dark oak territory with that nice creaminess keeping things from getting too strong or harsh. These flavors remain steady through out the second third of the Therapy. I think a glass or three of Cabernet would pair wonderfully with this cigar but it’s before noon so I’m sticking to water as to not raise eyebrows when I go out into “the real world” in a bit… Judgmental pricks.
You see, drinking is another very valid method of therapy but I’ll leave that for another post, another time…

The TNCC Crew was divided when reviewing Nomad’s Esteli Lot 8613 cigar for an upcoming podcast and I’m curious what they would think of this Nomad entry. I believe some of the transitions that a certain member, who shall remain nameless (Jason Tuttle), felt the 8613 was lacking might be found here in the Therapy. I always say “Don’t give me a boring cigar or a boring beer and I’ll be fine” and this stogie isn’t boring in the slightest. And this craft beer I’m chugging is simply delicio… I mean, this glass of water is delicious as well. Yum, water!

I lose the ash right before it hits the band of the cigar. Construction has been top notch throughout the smoke, with a relatively straight burn line that’s needed no touching up and the draw continues to impress. The final act is primarily composed of the oak and cream, strength wise the cigar has been a steady medium all the way. A faint note of dry almonds enters in the last inch and a half, reminds me a little of the white chocolate covered almonds I used to be allowed to indulge in once in a while. The draw gets a tad hot in the last inch and the retrohale gives a slight burn of the nostrils so I drop what little’s left down in the stinky ashtray. Today’s Therapy session is over.

I’m relaxed, I’m no longer thinking about my dog that we recently had to put to sleep, this Therapy session was a success. I’ll just put that Sweet Baby James cd away for another day…

UPDATE (March 1, 2016):
Tut smoked the Therapy Maduro at our weekly Tuesday Night gathering and highly enjoyed it. His insatiable desire for a multifaceted cigar at a pleasing price point was satiated. For now…
