Cigar Review – My Father Blue by My Father Cigars

It’s a complex, full bodied, expertly constructed cigar featuring nice transitions and a unique flavor profile... so why exactly can't I wrap my head around it?

We’ve reviewed a handful of offerings from My Father Cigars over the years, including many Tatuajes that were rolled at the My Father factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. The majority of these cigars were very good if not great. The company recently established their first factory in Honduras and this, their very first Honduran cigar, is Finca La Opulencia’s debut release. We also featured a My Father cigar on the show branded as the Don Pepin Garcia Blue Label so, hopefully, there’s no confusion there…

If you’re a fan of the color blue, the My Father Blue will certainly stand out on the crowded shelves of your local shop. Like most My Father bands, the artwork is highly detailed and I’m tempted to use the word elegant as far as describing the overall presentation. Underneath all the blue is a medium-shade, dry wrapper leaf that has a lot of texture to it. There’s a very strong aroma of dry hay pouring off the cigar and a touch of leather as well.

After experiencing a very musty cold draw comprised of floral and more hay, it’s time to set this beautiful bunch of leaves on fire. An inviting white pepper floods the nose right away and it’s quickly backed up with faint notes of honey and leather. Speaking of leather, that’s the primary flavor coming through early on here via the draw. It’s a mild leather that’s joined by a some more of that floral sensation and weak coffee notes. Smoke production is copious to say the least.

Graphite joins the already interesting retrohale as the burn line approaches the first of two bands. Although overall complex, the white pepper is still puffing its chest out as the dominant force upstairs. Construction thus far has been excellent all-around with a super smooth draw resulting in a near-perfect burn line. All the flavors are BIG now, the My Father Blue is delivering a medium strength, full-bodied smoking experience.

The draw’s weak coffee note has now transitioned into a not-nearly-as-weak coffee note and it’s standing toe-to-toe with the well-established leather downstairs. Holy shit, that was a lot of hyphens in that last sentence! The My Father Blue would pair beautifully with a pint of Guinness, or a pint of Boddingtons (I’ve been craving this beer lately), or a pint of any creamy stout for that matter. I also think it’d smoke amazing alongside a rum and Coke. The added sweetness introduced could be a game changer. And I don’t recommend smoking this cigar on an empty stomach.

As this powerful sonofabitch continues to kick my ass, I’m suddenly reminded of the original El Gueguense from Foundation Cigar Company. Also featuring a highly decorative blue band, that cigar had so much going on that we had a hard time wrapping our heads around it. Smoking the My Father Blue for the last 30 minutes has been a similar experience to that. We are past the fifty yard line already and I still don’t know what this cigar is.

It’s a really nice cigar! I’m enjoying the hell out of the relentless pepper that has begun to increase even more in strength. The musty accent notes of honey, graphite, are now joined by a touch of creaminess(?!?!) so that’s awesome. And the draw’s primary profile of leather and coffee is just dandy. Everything is loud, proud, and I’m just as confused as ever. Full disclosure: I’m confused a lot these days.

The My Father Blue finishes strong, imagine that. And in the last few moments here, things almost start to make a little sense. All the existing notes vibe with one another better than ever before as the cigar begins to burn my fingers. I should’ve bought the longer toro for review goddamnit. It was only $1.50 more! I may not know what this cigar “is” but I know I’ll be trying a larger vitola pronto.

THE NUB

TNCC FINAL SCORE = 94

As I’ve said countless times on this website and the TNCC crew has repeatedly said on the show, there is nothing worse than a boring cigar. If you’ve read this review up ‘til now, you’ll understand that the My Father Blue is anything but boring. It’s a complex, full bodied, expertly constructed cigar featuring nice transitions and a unique flavor profile. I’m very curious to calculate my score on this one…

* Total Smoking Duration: 57 minutes

** I am surprised by the score. I thought a high 92 was likely… wow. We don’t get many 94s here in The Corner Of No Hope.
