Way back in 2022, I reviewed the Creature cigar which made its debut as part of Tatuaje’s Monster Mash collection. The Creature impressed the hell out of me with a spicy yet smooth leathery retrohale and notes of oak, coffee, and cream. I liked it so much that it earned the #5 spot on our year-end Top 10 list. I closed my review with this bit of wishful thinking, “I would love to see an official Creature box release separate from the Monster Mash collection in the future as the blend is more than worthy of standing up on its own two webbed feet. Not only is this one impressive Monster cigar, it is one of the most enjoyable Tatuajes that I’ve smoked in a long while…”

Well, folks, it’s 4 years later and here we are!

This Creature cigar is both longer than the original Monster Mash version (formerly 5 3/8 x 48) and it features a slightly larger ring gauge as well. Considering its super-sized nature, the Creature feels surprisingly light in my hand and there are several, suspicious soft spots detected along the body. The wrapper leaf has a leathery texture that’s nicely accented by some surface oils. The only aromas found are of faint peppermint and leather directly off the slightly-tapered foot. As with the 2022 cigar, the band’s black-on-black text is barely visible.

I cut the Creature’s cap and the cold draw can best be described as must and earth. Upon ignition, biting black pepper floods through the nose. Downstairs, earth and very subtle leather are the first notes introduced. The draw is a bit tighter than I prefer, so I cut the cap slightly deeper and in the process the beautiful ash sadly drops.

Voila! The Creature’s draw is now much improved with smoke traveling up easily from bottom to top. It’s also smoking significantly faster now which makes sense. The black pepper has softened its edges somewhat on the retro; however, that same note is now beginning to arise (albeit muted) underneath the draw’s earthiness. Other than the initial draw issue, the Creature has been performing well from a construction standpoint.

As the Creature approaches the fifty yard line*, a sudden wave of bold, dark roasted coffee shows up both on the draw and retro. The coffee stands toe-to-toe with the black pepper but rapidly outshines the draw’s earthy/leathery components down below. That mostly pepper/coffee forward profile remains consistent for nearly the entire middle third of the cigar. The Creature is now more full than medium strength and full bodied. Maybe consider eating something prior to lighting this monster up. Doesn’t have to be anything heavy, a light snack or even just a few crackers would probably do the trick. If it’s pre-noon, live a little and have a bagel.

Construction-wise, the Creature is performing very well in its final act. The burn line is starting to grow a little wavy but who gives a shit. And those soft spots ended up being no big deal, so never judge a lumpy monster by its appearance. It’s what’s on the inside that really counts. The Creature From The Black Lagoon eventually found true love and you can too.

Something tells me I may have been wrong about his relationship status. My bad…
While I’ve been selfishly waiting for another unexpected flavor introduction, like the coffee note earlier, it never comes. The Creature begins to grow hot on my lips with about an inch remaining so I put it to rest. Another Tatuaje Monster slayed…
THE NUB

TNCC Final Score = 88
I purposefully didn’t revisit my review of the 2022 Creature prior to reviewing tonight’s cigar. One of the worst things a professional cigar media expert master reviewer like myself can have going into a review is preconceived notions. Looking back over it now, once the smoke has settled, the 2026 Creature is a totally different Monster both figuratively and literally. With the exception of the late addition of dark roasted coffee, this Creature redux (?) features a mostly singular profile that’s heavy on the black pepper and earthiness. In all honesty, I much preferred the original blend.

This particular presentation really worked for my TNCC cohort Tut when he smoked a sample recently and maybe it will for you too. So head over to Famous Smoke Shop and grab a coffin box for yourself. Just remember to cut the cap slightly deeper than you might usually slice it and eat something first.
* If I was a talentless cigar media personality, this would have been an ideal opportunity to type a few words in some fucking lame AI program and have it create an image of the Creature from The Black Lagoon wearing a football helmet, clutching the pigskin in his webbed hands as he raced across midfield. Hell, I could type a few more words and have The Wolfman in full linebacker gear chasing him down while a scantily-clad Bride of Frankenstein shakes her cheerleader pompoms on the sideline. But we don’t use AI here in The Corner Of No Hope. We have all the drunken intelligence to do what we do just fine without that lazy bullshit.
** Editor’s Note: A different Creature was used for the unlit cigar photographs. We usually keep all of the review photos consistent using only one cigar but I’m hungover from Monday Night Football and I forgot to snap a pic prior to lighting up. I guess things could be worse, I could be an Eagles fan. Snootchie Bootchies!
