Cigar Review – Deliverance Nocturne by Black Label Trading Company

The Deliverance Nocturne is a rustic ballsy cigar that’s big on strength and, thankfully, also big on flavor...

I was somewhat surprised to find that the only variation of the Deliverance line of cigars that the TNCC has reviewed to date was the Deliverance Porcelain way back in 2021. That’s a very good cigar that has really grown on me over the last few years. Other than that Connecticut shade-wrapped beauty, the original (much heavier) Deliverance is one of the creations from Fabrica Oveja Negra that I’ve probably smoked the least amount of over the years. In 2015, Black Label trading Company released the initial Deliverance Nocturne and now it’s back for the first time since 2020. Black Label’s James Brown had this to say in a recent press release:

“Nocturne is definitely a fan favorite. It’s one of the cigars we get asked about the most. For this release we wanted to change things up and include some vitolas that have never been released. Traditionally Nocturne has always come in a trio of figurado sizes. This year we are doing the first Parejo iterations, Robusto & Toro. But for the purists we are also releasing a limited number of Short Salomon’s & Perfectos.”

There’s a sweet mesquite aroma pouring off the foot of the Nocturne once the cello sleeve is removed. I also detect a faint aroma of peppermint gum when sniffing the Pennsylvania wrapper leaf directly. Speaking of which, the rustic broadleaf wrapper is dry and there is a small soft spot located directly under the silver and black band. Speaking of which, the skeleton artwork on the Nocturne’s band reminds me of the skeleton soldiers from “Army of Darkness”.

And that’s not a bad thing to remind me of at all. AoD rules! Speaking of which, no no, no more speaking of whiches. Let’s get down to business you primitive screwheads…

After a quick punch of the cap, the Nocturne’s cold draw is incredibly woodsy and slightly sour. Once flames meets tobacco, a sharp black pepper combined with an all-encompassing jalapeño spice is impossible to ignore upstairs. Bold dark roast coffee is the primary flavor downstairs backed up by a slight hint of cloves. Smoke production is copious.

A leather note joins the draw’s profile around the 1” mark just as the clove sensation is waning. The jalapeño aspect of the retrohale is also slowly receding as the black pepper grows more pronounced. So far construction has been great with a smooth open draw and acceptably straight burn line. That leather is now creeping in behind the pepper as well…

A slight char has now appeared alongside the draw’s coffee and leather and it works well with the existing flavors. The Nocturne has been consistently medium/full strength and full body as we approach the fifty yard line. A touch of salt begins to develop on the draw and, somehow, that note also plays nicely with the bold flavors pouring out of this thing. Lack of flavor is not a concern when smoking the Deliverance Nocturne. Speaking of which -okay, just one more- have you ever seen the movie “Deliverance”? It’s a very well made film if you’re a fan of Burt Reynolds and/or anal. I’m surprised the TNCC never did a podcast on that one…

I realize that I just mentioned the Nocturne’s strength being medium/full a mere minute ago but it’s now full-on FULL as the ash nears the band.

Oak begins to commingle with the pepper and leather through the nose. Is there a flavor characteristic of broadleaf tobacco that isn’t going to make an appearance?

All of the bold flavors present here stand their own ground and handle their moment in the spotlight well, the overall profile never comes across as muddled. I considered complaining at this point about the ash becoming a bit flakey here in the final act but that hardly seems like something to complain about. My only real complaint, and it’s a minor one, is that I wish the now absent saltiness had stuck around a little longer as it worked extremely well in balancing out this powerhouse. Nevertheless, even minus the salt the Nocturne sings.

THE NUB

TNCC Final Score = 92

The Deliverance Nocturne is a rustic, ballsy cigar that’s big on strength and, thankfully, also big on flavor. I couldn’t help but think throughout the 79 minute smoking duration that the Nocturne would pair beautifully with glass of sweet Kentucky bourbon. Featuring a nice complexity throughout and excellent construction, I highly recommend you pick up a few different sizes of the Nocturne to sample and fasten your fucking seatbelt.
