Welcome everybody to The Tuesday Night Cigar Club’s 5th Anniversary Drinking & Smoking & Drinking Some More Extravaganza!!! Tonight your favorite crew of lovable numbnuts return to where it all started, O’Briens Irish Pub in historic downtown Temple, Texas to celebrate a half decade spent drinking delicious (mostly) craft beers, smoking amazing (some of the time) premium cigars, and talking about one cinematic masterpiece after another (yes, there were a few duds here and there but who’s counting?). THE 1st CIGAR – SUPER SHOT BUCKSHOT 12 GAUGE by VIAJE CIGAR COMPANY

This blend comes to us from Viaje Cigar Company, our first Viaje smoke to be featured here on the podcast – lucky them – and was blended by brand owner Andre Farkas to have something to shoot in between rounds of clay shooting. The Super Shot Buckshot 12 Gauge is a cute little cigar that is constructed to resemble a shotgun shell (the packaging is constructed to resemble ammunition boxes as well). The closed foot caused a few of us some issues in getting the cigar going but eventually everything worked out.
The Buckshot 12 Gauge features a very nice vegetal spice on the retrohale and that’s the dominating flavor, far outshining the Nicaragua earth present on the draw. A distinct mineral note and mild sweetness does make an appearance on the back of the draw about halfway through the smoking experience which was a much welcomed addition to the cigar’s overall profile. And it should be noted that the aroma is awesome, everyone at the table commented on it which is a fairly rare occurrence. It’s a strong little cigar at a good price point that lives up to its ballsy name and we all enjoyed it!

J.C. Newman launched Brick House many years ago; a true Cuban puro cigar made with the finest Havana tobaccos. To honor his family and heritage, J.C. modeled the Brick House label after his childhood home – the only brick house in their small Hungarian village. Locals and visitors would gather at the house nightly to eat, drink, smoke, and enjoy each other’s company. But with the Great Depression came the end of the Brick House. Over 80 years later, grandsons Eric and Bobby Newman relaunched Brick House using the most exquisite Nicaraguan tobaccos carefully hand-rolled by master artisans and then aged in the mountains of Nicaragua. Brick House Maduro is rolled with the same highly-acclaimed Brick House filler blend and finished with a Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper. Every Brick House cigar is a melding of flawless construction, superb quality, and master blend. Much like ourselves tonight, J.C. Newman is also celebrating an anniversary in 2020 – 125 years in the cigar business! Now that’s impressive.
There’s a nice raisin like sweetness on the cold draw and the initial impression upon torching the foot is SMOOTH. There’s earthiness, but mainly coffee and cream rule the roost with this cigar. It’s the total opposite of our first cigar tonight, in that the retrohale provides basically nothing of note while all the action is all on the palate. AND tonight’s beer paired with the Brick House Maduro amazingly. At an impressive price point of $6.70 this stogie simply can’t be beat. Seek it out!

THE BEER – 40th HOPPY ANNIVERSARY ALE by SIERRA NEVADA BREWING COMPANY
The Hoppy Anniversary Ale has that classic California piney hop flavor in spades and that helps make this beer a fitting tribute to a flavor profile that Sierra Nevada played a big part in originating. At only 65 IBUs even our non-IPA fans at the table enjoyed the beer’s crispness, citrus component, and easy drinkability due to its somewhat tamed hoppiness.
This beer is a celebration of where the West Coast IPA started from, way before brewers were injecting one million plus different hop varietals into a can (which I LOVE them for by the way). And as I mentioned above, the Hoppy Anniversary Ale pairs beautifully with a maduro cigar. Don’t believe me? Well track you down a six-pack and see for yourself! And, I have to ask, why don’t you believe me? I’m an honest guy, I swear.
THE FILM – SHOTGUN (1989)
As I looked over our last five years of podcasts I realized that we haven’t done a lot of hard-hitting police procedural films on the show so here we are…
Downing shots for Shotgun Jones!!!
Ok, so what if the lead hero in Shotgun has the acting talent of Anna Nicole Smith minus the giant knockers? So what if the budget required the characters to revisit the same boring locations over and over and over again? So what if the “Shotgun Jones” theme song wasn’t catchy? And so what if three out of five guys sitting at the table thought this film was the worst movie they’d ever witnessed? Fritz Beer and myself saw enough glimpses of talent here, enough tiny sparks of cinematic light in the otherwise grimy darkness, to give Shotgun a (very tentative) thumbs up.
“That’s what Shotgun Jones doos! Does. Yeah, he doos dudes in the chest with a shotgun. That what he doos. Or that’s what he does. Whatever. Shotgun Jones!!!”
