Episode 81 – Killer Workout & Death Spa / 2012 by Oscar Barber Pole & Maduro cigars / Death By Coconut

“Turns out that we're just as stupid as everyone in tonight’s movie. Yay the TNCC is tank-top-tastic!”

We’re currently testing out some different camera options so YouTube viewers please bear with us!

Well boys and ghouls, we are still knee deep in horror films here in The Corner Of No Hope as our annual “Countdown to Halloween Bootacular & Spooktastic Drinking Extravaganza” is still in full swing! And tonight we have a double-feature for you that’s truly special. Don’t believe me? Well just scroll right down to the bottom of this here episode page, click on the show links, and see for yourself! And I can forgive you for not believing in me… but I never forget.

THE CIGAR – 2012 BY OSCAR BARBER POLE by OSCAR VALLADARES TOBACCO & CO.

Size: 6 x 52 toro box-press
Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés maduro & Candela
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan & Honduran
Price: $8.97

A beautiful box press, the barber pole wrapper shows signs of crystallization when twirled under the studio lights. Tut picked up both wheat and hay on the cold draw. Upon toasting the foot, there’s black pepper on the nose with a dominating rich chocolate note on the draw. This highly enjoyable ying and yang of spice and chocolate stays consistent throughout the first half with a creaminess also showing up in the second third.

Construction is superb with just the right amount of airflow on the draw and copious smoke production that travels seductively up the body of the cigar like a ghostly snake. There’s also a perfect burn line which is admirable considering two different wrapper leaves are used and, in this instance, woven together seamlessly and expertly. The strength jumps up a notch in the second half with the introduction of earth as the cream recedes. This was the best overall barber pole cigar we’ve ever featured on the show and at this price point you’d be a fool not to give it a shot.

TNCC FINAL SCORE = 93

THE CIGAR – 2012 BY OSCAR MADURO by OSCAR VALLADARES TOBACCO & CO.

Size: 6 x 52 box-press
Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés maduro
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan & Honduran
Price: $8.50

We’ve smoked the 2012 Connecticut, we’ve smoked the excellent 2012 Corojo, and here we are smoking the final 2012 entry this evening. The 2012 By Oscar Maduro cigar straight up looks like a candy bar. Ever wonder what smoking a Twix bar would be like? Well look no farther! Say what you want, but Oscar Valladares knows how to make a cigar look sexy. There’s dark chocolate on the draw and zero spice on the retrohale (which I predicted would be the case early in the show because I’m a world-renowned cigar expert). If this is indeed the “straight-up version” of the barber pole we smoked prior, it does not show its cards nearly as quickly as that cigar did. In fact, it’s a bit underwhelming compared to its more extravagantly wrapped brother. There’s chocolate (which fades away rather quickly), earth, French roast coffee, but all the flavors are very subdued… There is also a mineral component which is very nice early on and it was nowhere to be found in the barber pole variation.

Leather introduces itself around the halfway point and the strength increases around the same time. The 2012 By Oscar Maduro acts like a “typical maduro cigar” as far as flavors are concerned (earth, coffee) and construction is top notch on this entry as well. It’s no fault of this cigar that its other 2012 siblings are superior, in the 2012 line-up fourth place isn’t really a bad place to be.

TNCC FINAL SCORE = 88

THE BEER – DEATH BY COCONUT by OSKAR BLUES

At the top of the Death By Coconut cans there’s a motto “Pass, Dash, Hit” and while we never could figure out what the hell that means, Tut was very adamant that he simply wanted to “Pass, Pass, Pass” on this beer…

As a coconut lover he found the coconut presence to be just too much, while yours truly as a non-fan of coconuts found the flavoring to be rather subtle and surprisingly enjoyable. It’s smooth, tasty, and most of all NOT BORING which is a problem I have with a lot of porters. So Death By Coconut gets 2 out of 3 thumbs up from the TNCC!

THE FILMS – KILLER WORKOUT (1987) & DEATH SPA (1989)

Perhaps a podcaster who doesn’t drink so much would’ve looked into a connection between these two very similar films. I, unfortunately, am not that podcaster. We have so much fun digging into these fitness-centered horror flicks that I don’t want to give anything away here on this page. So I’ll just put this video here to wet your appetite and slowly walk away… and 5,6,7,8…

THE NUB

Maybe if we’d have watched Death Spa on another night separate from the far superior Killer Workout, and maybe if we’d smoked the inferior 2012 By Oscar Maduro on a different night than the 2012 By Oscar Barber Pole… perhaps things would be different. But as it stands now, there are clearly two winners that have emerged from this evening’s double-features. Well, three winners if you count YOU the audience. Now stretch those hamstrings, put on your leg warmers, and get to clicking the links below to join the party!!!

“and 5, 6, 7, 8! Sayonara you aerobicizing motherfuckers!!!”

Please leave us comments on the YouTube episode page, provide us with a review on iTunes, or be a real stud and do both! All these seemingly small gestures would be greatly appreciated as they let us know exactly what you’re thinking about this sweat soaked tidal wave of hardbodied insanity we like to call The Tuesday Night Cigar Club.

Below is tonight’s full episode for both your viewing and listening pleasure. Thank you for checking out The Tuesday Night Cigar Club and we’ll see you next time when we review another cigar, adult beverage, and film. May the wings of liberty never lose a feather…
