Season 2 of the Tuesday Night Cigar Club Podcast has officially begun!!! We start off this season by soaking in a double whammy of awesomeness in the form of an underrated 80s slasher film combo paired with the uber trendy alcoholic root beer that all the Facebook cigar kiddies are raving about these days (spoiler alert – we hated it). While the group was mixed on their reactions to tonight’s cigar, everyone was in synch when it came to their unanimous approval of the newest member of the TNCC – The Doctor!
Now I realize that you’re probably very confused at this point. Who is “The Doctor”? Why is he wearing a leather vest? Is he from California or something? Is he going to fuck up the brilliant chemistry that’s made the show such a startling success??? Well folks you’re just going to have to listen to the podcast to find the answers you seek. You’ll love this one, trust me.
THE CIGAR – CORE ZERO METAL
Core Zero is a new manufacturer on the scene based out of Denver, Colorado and they currently offer only two blends: The Indie (Sumatran wrapper) and The Metal (Maduro wrapper). I smoked the Indie Sesenta the night prior to recording the podcast and thoroughly enjoyed it (a “Beyond The Pod” mini review will be posted here on the site soon). That cigar featured some really nice complexity starting off with an eye popping blast of spice and pepper and then transitioning into some really enjoyable nutty flavors and natural sweetness. So, needless to say, I was pumped to sit down with the boys and light up the Metal cigar on the podcast.
Unfortunately the Metal did not live up to my pre-show expectations. Don’t get me wrong here – the Metal has that traditionally full maduro flavor and that one SINGLE flavor is nice. But I was looking for the same shifting of gears that I had experienced with the Indie, not a one note pony. However, it’s important to note that seated directly across from me at the table as always was Tut who really enjoyed the Metal. It turns out he’s smoked quite a bit of them since we were first introduced to the line at CATS Fest earlier this year and he’s a fan. The other members enjoyed it too so maybe I’m just an asshole who needs to leave all his lofty expectations at the door.
Perhaps this is a case of a straight forward smoking cigar that if you happen to like that specific prominent taste profile it’ll make you happy from start to finish. And at a really nice price point of less than $6 a stick that’s an experiment that you should happily conduct for yourself. You can find the entire line of Core Zero sticks for sale on their website. Go give em a shot and let us know what you think!
THE BEER – NOT YOUR FATHER’S ROOT BEER
Tonight we drank Not Your Father’s Root Beer from Small Town Brewery. I haven’t seen a product get this much free social media buzz in a very VERY long time. It seems like every online cigar group is being inundated hourly with posts showing off everyone’s newly acquired stash of this stuff. How the hell could we not review it? It has to be really fucking great, right? Right?!?
Unfortunately it sucked. It was so sweet that Tut and Yak Boy had to bail after just two pints, a sad first for the show. Mense and I soldiered on through SEVERAL more pints each and I’m sure I’ll pay for it on my next dental visit. Whatever dude dreamt up pairing this syrupy nonsense with a premium cigar needs to have his tastebuds examined.
I just find it hard to understand how one can get a full sense of the cigar they’re smoking when it’s being paired with a beverage this damn sugary. However, if we learned anything from Professor Jose Blanco’s tasting seminar it’s that everyone’s palate is different and there are no wrong opinions when enjoying food, drink, or smoke. So by all means to each their own but if you simply insist on digging into the popular (for now) world of boozy root beers try to track down the limited 19.5% ABV version! At least you’ll be nice and sloppy drunk as your teeth melt out your mouth. Cheers!!!
THE FILM – SLEEPAWAY CAMP & SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2: UNHAPPY CAMPERS
I’m going to give you five reasons to plop your ass down and watch these two films as quickly as possible.
And I can honestly say that there are at least another five equally as worthy reasons which you’ll discover quickly for yourself upon viewing these fantastic flicks. These movies are entertaining as hell and both feature memorable performance after memorable performance. While the first Sleepaway Camp is a perfectly executed exercise in classic slasher cinema, the sequel is a brilliant and fantastically gory send up of the genre. Both Felicia Rose and Pamela Springsteen bring the character of Angela Baker to life and while their spins on the “killer with a little secret” could not be any more different they’re both inspired and perfect in the role. As always, we really dig deep into both films on the podcast so give it a listen or the Tit Patrol will come to your house and you’ll be sorry. Yeah, there’s something called the Tit Patrol in one of these films so get your ass to the couch and enjoy the show!
THE NUB
Well, we missed the mark pairing wise on this show obviously. It should be noted that I did smoke another Metal cigar a few days later to make sure that the root beer hadn’t overwhelmed it so much that I just couldn’t distinguish the unique tastes of the cigar. I had essentially the same experience when the stogie was paired with a glass of my trusty reliable bourbon. BUT that’s where tonight’s third item comes in! While the pairing was off, the film conversation was amazing and ultimately a good night was had by all.
We’ll see you here next time when we review another film, cigar, and beverage. May the wings of liberty never lose a feather.
