So we discuss a movie tonight that takes place entirely in a Zoom session, Tut is drinking a Session beer, and here we are smoking the CAO Session cigar. Don’t try this level of pairing perfection at home you sonsofbitches! We are professionals after all. Well folks, here’s another highly entertaining episode of The Tuesday Night Cigar Club to keep you smiling and laughing when there’s not a hell of a lot to smile or laugh about these days. We hope you have just as much fun listening and watching to tonight’s show as we did cooking it up for you. So click the links below and JOIN THE PARTY!!!!!
THE CIGAR – CAO SESSION by GENERAL CIGAR COMPANY
Size: 5.25 x 54 (robusto)
Wrapper: Connecticut broadleaf
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic & Nicaragua
Price: $8.59 (and while these were provided to us by General Cigar Company for review, you can head on over to Famous Smoke Shop and use promo code “TNCC20” at checkout to knock that price down quite a bit, you’re welcome)
This cigar is a pitch black little sonofabitch featuring a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that displays all the dark, beautiful characteristics of a fine Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper (one of our favorites here in The Corner Of No Hope). Loads of dark chocolate and sweetness come off the cold draw and upon torching the CAO Session on fire there’s a mild subdued pepper through the nose and immediate impressions of cocoa, cedar, and a very strong earthy component on the draw.
As the smoking experience continues, earth and leather take the center stage overwhelming the cedar. The black pepper continues to be present on the retrohale but it’s always just “present” never too strong nor too light. A faint sweetness also comes and goes frequently on the backside of the draw which is a nice touch. Contruction-wise the CAO Session is performing fantastically with a smooth draw and the copious smoke production we’ve come to expect from a well fermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper leaf…
Once again folks, usually (before this mini apocalypse was thrust upon all of us) we would carefully – some of you have said “expertly” – pair our evening’s beer with the cigar and movie and we’d all drink that same beer and compare notes. But since this whole COVID-19 shitshow has happened, each member of the TNCC is now solely responsible for risking their lives out in the wild and acquiring their own beers for each episode…
With an ABV of 5.3% and 27 IBUs the 90 Shilling fits right in the standard mold of most red ales. And The Doctor found it, not surprisingly, smooth and even but ultimately unremarkable and forgettable. I personally am not a fan of red ales so that sounded about right to me. But it was 105 degrees outside on the night we recorded this episode and the beer was cold so technically it served its purpose. And our film takes place in the UK where shillings were once a thing so The Doctor fulfilled his pairing duties somewhat admirably.
While we have featured this beer before, way back on Episode 16, it had been so many years that Yaks felt it was worth revisiting especially since we are talking our way through a movie featuring demonic spirits tonight. So, like The Doctor, he also gets to check his beer pairing off as a success as well. A little sweetness, just a touch of hoppy bitterness, but a whole lot of flavor. Once again the Devil’s Backbone was winner.
While Tut picked this beer out at his local liquor store because “it had a pretty can”, it is a session beer (our cigar is named the Session!) and it’s Meta (us doing a Zoom podcast about a Zoom based horror film is META AS FUCK) so unbeknownst to Tut he actually cooked up the best thematic pairing of the night. Tut liked the beer because it had the presence of a pilsner disguised as an IPA with low bitterness, a nice crispness, and a mellow drinkability that served him well throughout the entire show.
One of my current favorite IPAs on the market, I absolutely love this beer! I chose the F5 because F5 is a function key on a computer keyboard and tonight’s film all takes place via the character’s computer screens. It’s the most creative, well thought out pairing of the night for certain. No surprise there. But more importantly, the F5 IPA is pure deliciousness from first to last sip. Featuring a super crisp, beautiful hop profile (85%!) and at 7+ ABV it will treat you right all night long.
Oh, and this particular hop profile really brought out the cedar flavor in tonight’s cigar if woodsy flavors are your jam. Seek this beer out ASAP!!!!
THE FILM – HOST (2020)
Directed by a guy named Rob Savage (man, how cool of a cool name is that?), this was an interesting watch and an even more interesting discussion because where we all (myself, Tut, and Yak Boy) thought this was a groundbreaking horror film that reinvented the horror wheel… The Doctor swooped in to let us know that everything that impressed us about Host had actually been done years prior in several other paranormal horror films such as the Paranormal Activity movies, Insidious, Conjuring, and the list goes on.
Because we didn’t have these cinematic ghost movies to reference, we gave a shit-ton of credit to Host for its originality where maybe we shouldn’t have BUT I will leave you with this – Host is a damn good movie regardless with damn good performances and impressive directorial touches despite its many influences. And, for you YouTube watchers, at the 1 hour and 11 minute mark of tonight’s show, a demonic spirit named Samael visited us on OUR Zoom session and you have to see it to believe it…
Please leave us comments on the YouTube episode page, provide us with a review on iTunes, or be a real stud and do both! All these seemingly small gestures would be greatly appreciated as they let us know exactly what you’re thinking about this sweat soaked tidal wave of hardbodied insanity we like to call The Tuesday Night Cigar Club.
Below is tonight’s full episode for both your viewing and listening pleasure. Thank you for checking out The Tuesday Night Cigar Club and we’ll see you next time when we review another cigar, adult beverage, and film. May the wings of liberty never lose a feather…
